INCLINE PROGRAM
MOTIVATING SAFER CONDUCT
effective
behavior management
It’s one thing to lecture kids on rules. It’s another thing, entirely, to motivate good conduct.
The Incline ProgramTM offers compassionate, engaging, and honest presentations from first responders, ER personnel, cycling safety educators, crash victims, legal experts, insurance pros, and more. When a teen or tween is cited for reckless riding, this behavior-management diversion program can make all the difference.
In accordance with classic instructional design principles strengthened by leading-edge developmental research, each segment of this modular program starts with presenters sharing stories from their personal experience, followed by authentic, open-ended questions, genuine discussion, and concluding with thought-provoking exercises, such as A Letter to Loved Ones. We make it real and motivational for kids and their parents.
WE HELP COMMUNITIES MOTIVATE YOUNG RIDERS TO DO BETTER.

A library of diverse incline presenters
We’ve been lining up a library of presenters who can share their stories and advice to your e-bike riders. Whether program participants are planning to ride, getting started with an e-bike, maturing out of careless riding, or need to work through a diversion program, the Incline Program is the answer. E-biking youth and their families will be able to learn from the professionals AND those who have rolled down the path ahead of them. Our illustrious presenters include a paramedic from the Orange County Fire Authority, a pediatric surgeon, a legal expert, an insurance professional, and families of crash victims. All these and more, available in our private library for Incline Program participants.

PROGRAM MATERIALS
The Facilitator’s Guide offers step-by-step help in managing and presenting an Incline Program experience. This modular, customizable program puts you in charge, empowering you to reach the riders in your community.
The participants’ Workbook is the key takeaway component that keeps kids rethinking and recommitting to safer conduct on their e-bikes. Thought-provoking assignments enable them to deepen their understanding of risks while developing their critical thinking skills regarding the marketing that has targeted them.
A TYPICAL SESSION
Most Incline Program sessions can be successfully scheduled as two-hour events. That gives the facilitator time to complete the following general program:
Ultimately, it’s up to the facilitator and the group’s circumstances to decide the length of each session. To support this, the program is designed to be modular and flexible. We want every group to succeed!

Discover heartfelt stories
kids need to know the why
As part of our Incline Presenters Video Library, we are proud to include a guest speaker from ABUS Inc., who will be sharing his personal insights explaining WHY helmets are so very important. Meet Phil and his two teens, as they share their thoughts on this crucial subject. A lot of safety experts will tell you how to wear a helmet. These ABUS speakers go beyond and reach the heart of the matter, so Incline Program participants and their families will truly appreciate the reasons why they should wear a helmet on every ride.

THEY NEED US TO SET HIGH STANDARDS
Our approach is built on the “mentor mindset,” a philosophy inspired by the research of Dr. David Yeager, PhD. We believe that truly empowering young people means moving beyond over-protection or “coddling.” By the same token, we advise against overreacting to poor conduct with blind rage. Neither approach leads to self-motivated success.
Instead, we honor their potential by demanding the excellence we know they are capable of achieving. We set high standards for e-bike safety and rider conduct while e-biking around town, not to be restrictive, but because we trust their ability to be responsible and self-aware. We set the bar high, and we believe in their capacity to follow through successfully.

KNOW THEY CAN GET THERE
AND THEY NEED US TO believe in them
A lot of teens need motivation in prioritizing safety over other goals, like getting to school early to see friends. They can learn to self-motivate when it comes to challenges like remembering to wear a helmet or to ride solo on their e-bike. Nagging kids repeatedly has shown to motivate them to do one thing: tune out the noise. Instead of nagging and feeling frustrated, parents can coach their young riders to figure it out and prioritize safety. After setting a high standard for remembering, it’s up to the parents to trust their kid to remember.
Teenagers riding e-bikes and e-motos aggressively or performing dangerous stunts are mostly looking for attention, respect, and a sense of belonging. They get this feeling from online likes, influencer videos, and friends. Watch the online influencers for a while, and you will probably get a sense that they’re not promoting e-motos out of the goodness of their hearts. In movie terms, we recommend that you “follow the money” when it comes to manipulating families to buy these expensive products.
In the Incline Program, families learn how to blend compelling, honest talk with a clear message of trust: “We expect riders to know where it’s appropriate to train and perform stunts or race, and where it’s important to focus on safety. We have high road-safety standards, and we trust you to meet them.” As part of this, we must prove to teens that the e-moto industry is manipulating them, using influencers and events to make them feel recognized for their talents and skills … just to sell products. Once they see the truth, we can then guide their natural desire to become skilled “stars” toward safe, approved places. These places, like special stunt parks or racing events, would let them safely show off and be recognized for their talent without risking public safety or enriching a sometimes uncaring industry.
The equation to make this happen is simple. Motivate kids with the truth and inspire them with trust in their potential. Getting cities to follow-through will take action. The good news is, the best people to advocate for change will be our teens.
